Historical attractions

Amersfoort's rich history is the city's greatest treasure. Why not visit the Koppelpoort, a unique combination of a land gate and water gate that dates back to around 1425. The Wall Houses - of which Museum Flehite is one - were built from 1500 onwards where the old city wall once stood, and are made from the wall's original materials.

Amersfoort KunstKwartier art district

KunstKwartier Amersfoort is an art district in the heart of Amersfoort's cosy city centre. Take a stroll through this picturesque area and discover a treasure trove of art and culture, including several art galleries and museums. Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren, the pride of Amersfoort

Climb the 98-metre Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren, one of the tallest late medieval towers in existence. The tower, also known as Lange Jan, is the city's most well-known landmark. Construction of the tower started after 1450 and was completed around 1500. Besides being clearly visible in the city, the tower is also an audible presence, with 100 bells, 7 of which are swinging bells.

Amersfoort Boulder

Amersfoort is known as the 'Keistad', or boulder city, due to a large boulder on the edge of the city centre. The boulder weighs 7,157 kilograms, is 2 metres tall and has a circumference of 5.25 metres. The Boulder has a rich history. It was towed all the way from Soesterberg to the city centre on a sled by 400 Amersfoort locals in 1661. 

Soestdijk Palace

Soestdijk Palace, a royal palace dating back hundreds of years, is located in Amersfoort's surrounding region. Explore the former residents' impressive period rooms and private quarters. The palace will be opened to the public for a limited time in 2020 before being repurposed as a hub of Dutch innovation and enterprise.
